Camping Rules and Guidelines in Bulgaria

Maria Cholakova

Camping in Bulgaria can immerse you in the country's diverse natural beauty. From lush mountains to serene lakeshores and pristine forests, opportunities await. Yet, to ensure a safe and enjoyable outdoor experience while also preserving the environment for future generations, it is crucial to adhere to camping rules and guidelines.

Choosing Camping Areas

Whenever possible, opt for established camping areas and campgrounds.

Bulgaria has many official campsites across the country, providing essential amenities such as:

  • Toilets

  • Potable water sources

  • Waste disposal facilities

  • Power outlets

By camping on these sites instead of camping anywhere you want, you can cut the environmental impact of your trip.

If you are camping with a vehicle (camper, van, car, etc.), please park only in designated areas and campgrounds.

Moreover, off-road driving and overnight stays in nature reserves and national parks is not allowed. That's to prevent damage to sensitive ecosystems. Tenting is also prohibited in Bulgaria's conservation zones.

Please note that the government has been trying to change the law about camping outside of campsite zones for a few years now. By the summer of 2024, it may already be illegal to camp outside of the designated areas.

Here is more info on the project for the regulation of campgrounds in Bulgaria. It's not yet in place but we expect the government to vote on it pretty soon.

Leave No Trace

One of the cardinal rules of responsible camping is to leave no trace. Make sure to clean up after yourself and your group.

Always pack out all trash, including food scraps, wrappers, and any other litter. Leave your campsite as pristine as you found it to maintain the cleanliness and beauty of the natural surroundings.

Respect Wildlife

Bulgaria is home to diverse wildlife, and encountering animals can be a highlight of your camping experience. Yet, campers need to respect their habitats and behaviors.

Do NOT disturb or approach wildlife, and under no circumstances should you feed them! Furthermore, before you go to sleep, ensure your food is securely stored somewhere high and away from your tent or camper/van. That's to prevent attracting wildlife to your camping ground.

Encounters with wild boars, brown bears, coyotes, and venomous snakes (vipers) are common in the mountain and forest regions. Also, some of the animal species you may come across in Bulgaria are endangered. For example, the Balkan lynx, Eastern imperial eagle, European mink, Balkan chamois, Dalmatian pelican, or European tree frog.

Water Sources

When camping in Bulgaria, it's vital to properly manage your water needs by using clean water sources for drinking and cooking. If potable water is unavailable at the camp area, bring your own supply.

When using natural water bodies like rivers, lakes, and streams, avoid contaminating them with soap or detergents. Use biodegradable, eco-friendly soap if necessary, and dispose of wastewater away from water sources.

Campfire Safety

Campfires are a camping tradition, but their use must be in accordance with local regulations. Follow the available marks and signs in the campsite zones. Some areas may restrict or prohibit open fires due to fire hazards.

Where fires are allowed, always use established fire rings or camping stoves. Never leave a fire unattended, and completely extinguish it before leaving your camp.

Toilet Facilities

In areas without toilet facilities, we urge you to practice proper waste disposal.

Follow the Leave No Trace principle by digging a cat hole for human waste disposal. Ensure the hole is at least 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) deep. Situate it at least 200 feet away from water sources.

Bring along a portable toilet or "WAG bag" for waste containment in areas with stricter regulations.

Respect Local Communities

When camping near Bulgarian local communities, be respectful of residents and property owners. Seek permission if you intend to camp on private land, and respect their privacy and property boundaries. Keep noise levels to a minimum and follow any local guidelines or regulations.

Noise and Behavior

Maintain a quiet and respectful atmosphere at your campsite, especially during quiet hours, from late evening to early morning. Be mindful of other campers who may be seeking a peaceful experience in nature. Avoid loud music and disruptive behavior that can disturb the tranquility of the outdoors.

Local Permits and Regulations

Always check and adhere to the specific regulations of the area where you plan to camp. Some regions may require permits or have additional rules, such as fire bans or restrictions on camping near waterways. Check for specific restrictions online in advance and follow the signs around the campsite zone you are staying at.

Safety Precautions

Prioritize safety during your camping in Bulgaria adventure!

Inform someone trustworthy about your travel plans, including your itinerary and return time. Rapidly changing weather conditions are quite common, especially in the mountainous zones. Prepare for all kinds of weather by packing appropriate gear, including:

  • Rain gear

  • Double layer tents

  • Warm clothing

  • First aid supplies

  • Waterproof bags

  • Waterproof clothes

  • Power banks or/and solar chargers

  • Pack food and water for 2-3 extra days

Familiarize yourself with local emergency contact numbers (112) and know where the nearest medical facilities are before you go camping in Bulgaria.

By following these guidelines, you can enjoy a responsible and sustainable camping experience in Bulgaria. You can savor the stunning natural landscapes while also helping to protect the environment and maintain the tranquility of camping site areas.
