Geological Formation of the Stone Mushrooms

The mushroom-shaped rock structures intrigue geologists, inspire local legends and attract nature enthusiasts and tourists from around the world.

Rock Composition and Mushroom Formation Process

The Stone Mushrooms of Beli Plast are primarily composed of sandstone and conglomerate rock. The mushroom caps are brownish or greenish due to celadonite deposits. The stems are white with a pink hue due to the presence of the clinoptilolite mineral (zeolite). The blue and black spots are a result of manganese concretions.

Erosion, weathering, and selective erosion of softer layers of rock sculpted the Stone Mushrooms through the centuries. The shape of the rocks is truly remarkable. The caps consist of harder, more resistant layers. While the stems consist of softer rock eroding at a different rate.

These sedimentary rocks have undergone millions of years of natural processes shaping them into their distinctive mushroom-like forms today.

Cultural Significance

Local Legends

The Stone Mushrooms near Kardzhali are heavily ingrained in local folklore.

Legend has it that, there was a coal maker living in the fortress of Perperikon. He was poor but he had four extraordinarily beautiful daughters. The girls were strong and hardworking, assisting their father and occasionally venturing outside to fetch water. One day, when they went to get water, they were ambushed by bandits near the river.

The beautiful girls managed to escape and hide in the fortress. But unfortunately, Perperikon went under siege. The bandits killed the men and captured all the women. The leader wanted to choose the most beautiful among them to be his wife, planning to sell the rest into slavery. He chose the eldest sister.

Somehow, the eldest sister managed to grab his dagger and strike him, while her sisters attacked the others with whatever they could find - stones and wood. Afterward, they fled into the nearby forest.

The bandits went after them, and when they caught up, they beheaded the eldest sister. She turned into a mushroom, and the same fate befell her sisters. Frightened, he leaped onto his horse and tried to escape, but at his first step, he was transformed into a black rock.

Locals still call the lonely rock near the mushrooms 'black hill'.
